Tips For Managing The New SPAM Filter

Brainstorm's new spam filtering system is based on Barracuda Spam Firewall. The
Barracuda Spam Firewall is an integrated hardware and software system which
Brainstorm has invested in substantially to provide the best possible spam
protection for our customers. It provides a powerful and easy to use, and
affordable solution to eliminating spam and viruses from your email by
providing protection against spam, viruses, phishing, and spyware.

The system that we have put in place attempts to filter out the worst spam
while still making sure that legitimate messages are not affected. Spam
that is trapped will show up in a special folder called your Quarantine
Inbox.

Here is some important information about our Spam Filtering Service:

How to Check Your Quarantine for Missing Messages

1. Log in to your Quarantine Inbox at http://spamfilter.brainstorminternet.net:8000/cgi-bin/index.cgi.
2. Look through the messages. If you find one you want, you might want
to whitelist it and move it to your Inbox. To whitelist a message means
that in the future all email from that person will bypass the spam filter.
To whitelist an individual message just click Whitelist under Actions. To
whitelist a group of messages check the box next to each one then click the
Whitelist button.
3. You can also release a message from Quarantine by clicking Deliver.

Please note: Manually deleting messages in your Quarantine is OPTIONAL. If you ignore the Quarantine notifications the messages in Quarantine will automatically be deleted for you after 16 days.

Adjusting Your Barracuda Preferences

1. Log in to your Quarantine Inbox at http://spamfilter.brainstorminternet.net:8000/cgi-bin/index.cgi. Click on
the Preferences tab.
2. In Preferences you can change your password, add email addresses to
Whitelist and Blacklist, adjust the frequency of the Quarantine reporting,
etc. You can also adjust your Spam Settings.
3. Quarantine Score is the most important value. It is the score by
which spam is filtered, the lower the value the more messages will be
filtered. The default value is 5. If you set this to a lower value more
spam will be filtered. If you set it to a higher value less spam will be
filtered. Some good choices are 3 (for more aggressive filtering) and 7
(for less filtering).
4. Block Score is the value that will silently discard spam without
putting it in the Quarantine. The default value is 10 (disabled).
5. Note: Blacklisting is ineffective against spam. Blacklisting should
only be used against real people, and should be used with caution, since an
email from a blacklisted address will be silently deleted without the
possibility of recovering it.

What can you do if you still are receiving spam?

We recommend that customers deal with any remaining spam through the use of
filters in their email programs. For example Microsoft Outlook 2003 and Mac
Mail both have good built-in junk mail filters. If you use Microsoft
Outlook 2003 you can increase the filtering by clicking on Tools, Options,
then click the Junk E-Mail button and set it to "high."

We also recommend the free anti-spam programs from Trend Micro which work
with both Outlook and Outlook Express.
